Friday, November 3, 2000 - Fitness,
Weather and Wembley Stadium
It
has been a busy time for me but my main priority of course
has been getting my fitness back to optimum level. Apart from
my tribute dinner on the 25th October, which was a huge success,
I have kept my evenings for relaxing. Speaking of the dinner,
Sue Barker was great. I felt very at ease and it was just
like having a chat, only there were hundreds of people.
I was due to appear on ‘A Question of Sport’ on Monday of
this week but due to the crazy weather it had to be postponed.
I turned up at Villa Park to find that even training had been
cancelled. It was as though the country came to a standstill!
Against natural disasters man is powerless.
Training has been coming on very well. Mentally I feel strong
and the great news is that it looks very likely that I will
be back in the squad for this Sunday’s away match against
Everton. I CAN’T WAIT. It has been such a frustrating time
for me and at last I’ll be able to get out there with the
boys.
I am now fronting an advertising campaign for Heathrow Express
promoting their special winter offer of free travel on the
Heathrow Express if bulky sports equipment such as skis, snowboards
or golf clubs are checked in at Paddington Station. So yesterday
afternoon I went to Paddington Station to do a photo shoot
and I posed for photographs with skis, snowboards, golf clubs
and 20 footballs!
Today, after training, I did my bit for Birmingham. I unveiled
a sign commissioned by Birmingham City Council that reads
‘Thank you for visiting Birmingham’, which is located where
the Birmingham Boundary crosses the A45 Coventry Road on the
approach to Birmingham International Airport. So you there
you are; London, Birmingham, two beautiful cities, easy to
access and to fly from.
A sad occasion was the closure of Wembley Stadium yesterday.
It is now going to be demolished and rebuilt. So goodbye to
the great, mythical colosseum - we shall miss your two towers!!!
Well my friends, I must close now. I wish you all a very nice
weekend.
Au revoir.
