Thursday, April 26,
Glenn Hoddle and Spurs
Salut!
My return to White Hart Lane on Saturday will be one of the
most emotional moments in my career.
I had such a happy time when I was at Tottenham that in many
ways it will be difficult to go there with a different team.
I had so much fun every time I walked out on to the pitch,
and I had a really special relationship with the Spurs fans.
The reception they used to give me was just amazing. I shall
be pleased to see them again, but I shall be a little bit
apprehensive as to how they will greet me when they see me
walk out wearing Aston Villa's colours, rather than their
own. It will be both fantastic and difficult for me at the
same time.
Of course, so much has changed since I left the club last
summer. At that time, Alan Sugar was the chairman and George
Graham was the manager, but now there are new owners and a
new management team in place.
I was delighted for the fans when Glenn Hoddle was appointed
manager - it was the best thing that could have happened to
the club. They have at last got a man in charge who is capable
of bringing back the glory, glory days to Tottenham Hotspur
football club.
Glenn will bring a different style of play to the club, and
hopefully for the fans it will mean an improvement in their
fortunes. He was a legend as a player for Spurs, and I am
sure that he will do everything he can to become a legend
as a manager too.
Glenn has already spoken about improvements he can make to
the club. For example he plans to bring in a chiropractor
to work with the players in a bid to reduce injuries, and
a team building expert to talk to the players and help them
prepare for matches.
I think that Glenn will bring a more professional approach
to the club, in terms of the medical side, the diet and the
preparation for matches. It will be a more continental style,
because Glenn learnt a lot when he played in France about
how they approach the game as a whole.
The fact that Glenn worked so well with Arsene Wenger when
they were together at Monaco, means we shall see some of Arsene's
influence in the way Glenn does things. I am sure he will
take the best bits he has learned from all the managers he
has worked with in his career and blend them into his own
style at Spurs.
The Spurs fans will be expecting to see a more entertaining
style of play from their team and Glenn knows that the fans
and the club want results with class.
But he must base his team on a very strong defence if he wants
to improve the rest of the attack. Once you are strong defensively,
you can have some fun up front, because it makes you more
confident.
As I said earlier, it will be strange for me to see so many
old friends when I return to White Hart Lane for the first
time since my transfer to Villa. You share so many things
with a bunch of players and staff, then suddenly you change
clubs and have to represent a different team.
But I am a professional and I shall be playing for the colours
I have on my back, especially as Villa need a win to keep
alive our hopes of claiming a UEFA Cup spot. The Villa fans
have been terrific to me, and I appreciate the way they have
taken me into their hearts in the same way that fans at my
previous clubs did.
I still get so much fan mail from Spurs supporters, mostly
asking me when I am coming back, and it is very flattering
to know that they feel this way.
Everyone was so nice to me at Spurs, I never had any problems
there, which is why it makes it difficult to go back with
a different club.
I am sure it will be a special game, and I hope I am part
of it!
A bientôt
David Ginola.
