Friday, May 31, France v Senegal

Salut!

I went to the French embassy in London to watch the opening game of the World Cup. The French Ambassador had invited a number of his colleagues, amongst them ambassadors of Denmark, Germany, Korea and Senegal to watch the France-Senegal match.

It was a very tense match, France created some great chances, but Sylva, the Senegal goalkeeper pulled off many great saves. I was very impressed with Al Hadji Diouf, African Player of the Year.

After the match the Senegalese ambassador gave an amazing speech, in which he conceded that the victory was as much French as Senegalese.

None of the French team apart from Frank Leboeuf and Christophe Dugarry play in France, all the Senegal players play in France.

In case you wonder, I was at the embassy to conduct interviews for the Johhny Vaughan World Cup Extra show with some of the guests. I got to interview the Danish, French and Senegalese ambassadors as well as Bianca Jagger. We watched the match in a fantastic spirit, at the end everyone was wearing Senegal caps. The food was lovely too.

The show will be broadcast tonight, i think first on BBC Choice at around ten tonight and then on BBC1 at twenty past eleven. Check program for details ....

Will this be the year in which a team from Africa wins the World Cup?

A bientôt,

David Ginola.
