Friday, June 21, England lose to Brazil

Salut!

It was disappointing to see England lose to Brazil, because they were definitely capable of beating Brazil. Unfortunately they didn't play the kind of football they needed to beat Brazil, who even on an average day are a difficult side to beat.

I thought that after Owen's goal they were on a good path, but when Ronaldhino brilliantly set up the equaliser just before the end of half time, Brazil regained control in the second half.

The winning goal that Ronaldhino scored from a free kick was fantastic. I think he knew exactly what he was doing, but he was also lucky to pull it off. He was very unfortunate to get sent off just seven minutes later, and England should have used the extra man on the field to greater advantage.

Seaman was very upset at the end because perhaps he felt his position for the second goal hadn't been good, as he expected it to be a cross. But I don't think anyone should blame him because it was a very unusual goal. He is a very good goal keeper and not easy to beat, so the fact that it went in, further emphasises what a good goal it was.

It is a real shame for England, but Brazil were quick, strong and skilful, and now look the most likely candidates to lift the cup. In today's performance, Ronaldhino was the most dangerous player, but his red card means he'll miss the semi-final against either Senegal or Turkey. Brazil and Senegal would be quite a contest.

I hope that the media don't look for a scapegoat for England's defeat, because it's much nicer to concede defeat gracefully. The manager is usually a target but I think Sven deployed the right tactics. If Owen wasn't injured, perhaps he should have stayed on, and I would have loved to see one of my favourite players, Robbie Fowler, come on as well, as England were sufficiently strong at the back; but hey, it's easy to offer ifs and buts after an event.

Germany was lucky to beat America 1-0, as the Americans were outstanding. They showed lots of potential, and I cannot wait to see what they will do in the future. Germany now face either Spain or South Korea - I fancy Spain, but who'd be a betting man with the surprises this World Cup has delivered!

A bientôt,

David Ginola.
